Book Review: The Curse

The Curse by new author Mandy Baker is a brief but completely enjoyable novella capturing your attention with a love that beats the odds, a mystery that keeps you guessing, and an ending that leaves you ready for the next book in the series.

When Alex meets Liz for the first time, the successful, albeit unscrupulous treasure hunter falls for the feisty woman before he can help himself.  Determined to be worthy of her love, Alex reshapes his life and ends up marrying this woman who changed everything.  Everything seems so right until they find themselves on an archeology dig competing with other teams to get to the unknown prize first.  When Liz breaks off on her own and disappears, Alex’s world turns upside down as he searches for her, even while Liz fights to reverse the curse.

Mandy Baker is an incredible story-teller.  While The Curse is direct and to the point, the plot moves smoothly and the characters are easy to relate to.  While there are a few editorial mistakes and a couple glaring questions, the book itself clears the way for an incredible series, which I expect Ms. Baker will use to elaborate on Liz’s gift/curse, develop more of the love story between Liz and Alex, as well as the adventures they are bound to find themselves on!

I thoroughly enjoyed this first book by Ms. Baker!  The Curse is the perfect rainy day book.  So grab that cup of tea, your fluffy blanket, and get ready to get lost with Liz.

  1. If I could write a book I would write about the life of a military wife trying to learn the robes in a command full of veteran wives.

  2. “If you could write a book about anything, would you and why?”
Sure, I don’t see why I shouldn’t write a book. I don’t think it would be a long one and I have no clue what I would write about, but I know I have lots to say and I know some pretty awesome literary nerds to help me out! =)

  3. This review truly made me want to read this book. I like love stories and mysteries (along with other genres). So, I hope I might win this book.

If I could write a book, I might write a collection of odd thoughts, trivia, stories and lessons learned from my own life. It would probably include much about travel, and some about married life, raising children, and perhaps crafts. Life teaches you lots of lessons. Perhaps I would gear it towards young people. Hmmmmm
